Administration officials confirmed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s impact on government workers.
