An Story of Surprising Kindness: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Ground

During the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I figured to book lodging after getting there, however when I arrived, a big convention was happening and all the youth hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could just sleep at the terminal – but quickly found that airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes all night. Not knowing quite what to do and feeling increasingly desperate, I caught a bus into town and started wandering in the direction of a gaming venue, believing it was a place to spend those hours in an establishment that was open 24/7. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition to succeed at the admissions interview the next morning, yet, as a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.

It seems I seemed lost because a woman spotted me loitering in downtown and wondered if I was OK. I shared my predicament and right away she said I could crash on the ground in her student dorm at ANU – which was perfect, considering that was where the important interview was the following day. She even offered a meal: one filled rolls she brought back her work shift. This gave me a hot shower and a protected spot and secure for the evening.

In retrospect, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she accepted as a young woman letting a guy she had only just encountered crash at her place. In those days I existed within my male privilege bubble and did not consider to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she took that chance – and remain incredibly thankful.

I didn’t end up go to that university, and I never saw her again, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of kindness. It is my wish karma has returned her generosity tenfold. Our society requires more people with such compassion.
