Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the flight.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the tide of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, including elevated attention for her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
