Condemnation Erupts as Former President Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Spurs Fierce Backlash

Figures from across the political aisle and the entertainment world are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic deaths of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Social Media Statement

After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on his platform to describe the late director as "anguished and struggling". The post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".

Police Update and Detention

Authorities have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bail was established at a significant amount.

A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.

“What a vile and despicable statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also criticized the statements. She referenced previous rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any lower?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "This is a sick man."

Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."

Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks

A number of Republican elected officials also expressed disapproval.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.

Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He publicly challenged others in his political party to justify the comments.

Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.

"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."

Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence unequivocally after the killing of another political figure.

An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
