Israeli citizens observe two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations continue
Israelis have assembled around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The incident saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership postponed state memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but events still were held throughout the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed throughout the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' delegations met in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the agreement.
A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an evening round of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official explained the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the deal.
He noted that the talks are "difficult and have still not produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the gaps between the two sides.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- An enduring ceasefire
- The trade of the prisoners still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Future administration of the region
Citizen Reaction
In the city's memorial area that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling survived the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until each abducted person return not a single person will be secure."
"When we see all home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can commence heal," she concluded.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Activist one woman remarked: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be secure."
Research now consistently show that around seventy percent of the population prefer the hostilities to finish in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of the music event, those paying respects assembled to honor the dead.
From that location, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli shelling carried on.
In the urban center, attacks were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side district, area and zone districts and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"When the night falls, the fear comes with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack last year, shared.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, embracing, notably my youngest child who places his face on me all night."
"Continuously we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."
Medical Crisis
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had received the corpses of six people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the southern district.
Another medical facility in the south region of the city reported another two victims had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the south region, medics said.
