NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue during his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, was not quick to announce this decision immediately following his triumph in November.

"The choice came down to the security of my family and the imperative to directing my full attention on carrying out the affordability agenda the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, it will forever remain within me and my work," he said.

Political Debate

In his campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit even though he came from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a venue for official events, and advocated for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience an environment very different than his humble Astoria digs.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the housing expenses outpaces the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
