Russian President Vladimir Putin Assures Steady Oil Supplies to the Indian Nation in Snub of Washington Demands

During a clear signal to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin stated to PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to guarantee “uninterrupted” supplies of oil to India. These remarks came when Putin and Modi met in Delhi and declared their bilateral ties were “resistant to foreign coercion.”

A Signal For the Western Countries

Putin's comments, made on Friday, seemed to be a direct challenge at western countries, that have repeatedly attempted to urge New Delhi into reducing its historical ties with Moscow. The context comes after earlier Washington's moves, including the introduction of import duties against Indian goods over its acquisition of discounted Russian crude.

“Moscow remains a trustworthy supplier of oil and gas and anything needed for the development of India’s economy,” he stated. “Russia is prepared to keep guaranteeing the steady flow of energy for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, without referencing crude explicitly, supported the focus by saying that “a stable energy base has been a robust and vital cornerstone of the India-Russia partnership.”

Challenging American Pressure

Before the summit, during a media interview, Putin had challenged American pressure regarding India's dealings with Russia. He argued, “When Washington can claim the privilege to buy our atomic materials, how can you deny India claim the same privilege?”

Putin's arrival marked his first journey to India following the onset of the situation in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi made a clear attempt to project that the friendship between the two leaders was undisturbed.

A Warm Reception

Employing an notable move, Modi welcomed directly Putin upon his arrival. They embraced warmly as close allies before holding a private dinner together.

The Indian prime minister referred to India's partnership with Russia as “a beacon” and added it was “built on shared respect and deep trust.”

Expanding Strategic Ties

Friday's talks produced multiple significant pacts in the fields of military and economic cooperation. One significant result was the signing of an strategic roadmap aimed at 2030, which targets to boost bilateral trade to $100bn per year by the target year.
