Significant Upheaval Ahead: UK's Worst-Case Climate Emergency Outcomes Unveiled by Researchers
The gravest projected effects of the climate crisis for the UK have been outlined by scientists, encompassing a blistering 4C increase in temperatures to a 2-metre surge in sea level. A separate possibility predicts a drop of 6C in temperature following the shutdown of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt farming and power requirements.
Plausible Events, Not Predictions
These impacts, a number of which are linked to critical climate thresholds, are considered as improbable but possible. The researchers stated that these models addressed a shortfall in risk assessment that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for extreme outcomes.
"The severe weather events we have outlined are not forecasts, but they are plausible," said the lead researcher who oversaw the research. "Britain has been planning lacking the frameworks to plan for worst-case scenarios. We've now given decision-makers what they need to prepare for future conditions they hope never happen, but dare not dismiss."
A Suite of Harsh Climate Projections
Another collection of severe models maps the potential extent of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These show that temperatures could rocket in certain periods by up to 6C higher than average, while rainfall could be 300% of normal levels.

Major Scenario Highlights
- Four-Degree Warming: Global temperatures rising well above 4C by 2100 could transpire if climate action collapses or if strong feedback loops like the Amazon rainforest perishing emit its enormous store of carbon. This would cause intense and enduring heatwaves and droughts affecting the UK in summer.
- Atlantic Current Collapse: A critical sea current, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is slowing down and showing signs of collapse due to global heating. A full shutdown starting around 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK. "Farming would face immense difficulties and water resources would be drastically changed," noted the lead researcher.
- Sudden Ocean Inundation: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if polar ice in the Arctic and Antarctic melt abruptly, submerging coastal cities and towns. In contrast to the other scenarios, this risk is already recognized by planners.
- Clean Air Warming: Global averages could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is sharply cut. This counterintuitive effect occurs because tiny specks from burning coal reflect sunlight from warming the ground.
Planning for the Worst
The severe models could be applied to guide the building of major projects, including housing developments, power generation facilities and urban drainage systems. Understanding these climate risks could also speed the transition to slash carbon pollution.
The research formulated the severe projections using a combination of real-world events, digital projections and climate physics. The possibilities exclude international cascading effects including the agricultural collapse and resource wars.

The government's climate advisors has stated that the UK needs to "become resilient to moderate heating" and examine the risks for four degrees. Past policy documents have been labeled being "insufficient" by some observers.
