The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Unilever Prevented Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
One of the original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated how parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the business with Jerry Greenfield, announced that he plans to independently develop the controversial product within an individual collection showcasing issues the company has been prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Between Founders and Corporate Owner
This latest development intensifies the ongoing conflict between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders have asserted that Unilever and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Flavor becoming a Symbol of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen announced via an Instagram video how he's developing an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, requesting public suggestions for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its colors, that match the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement and Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company which was first established several years back for endorsing former political contender Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes and Upcoming Intentions
The founder indicated how he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
The announcement comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, after decades of involvement, citing concerns regarding how its independence was undermined after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen commented how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for its independence so that it can achieve the social mission, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he told journalists.
