The Showrunner Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the hit sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response
Anyone might to get swayed by the constant speculation and online debates about Pluribus. He is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's by design. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Does the showrunner Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… in a way.
“We have some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, one could always use the classics?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
