He secured the league's Most Valuable Player honor in three of the past four years.

Thrice-crowned National Basketball Association MVP Jokic suffered a "gut-wrenching" injury to his knee while the Denver Nuggets lost by a score of 147-123 at the Heat.

The star player injured himself late in the first half following an inadvertent coming together with fellow Nugget Jones.

The other player came down on the foot of the MVP, and he instantly went down to the floor clutching his leg.

The veteran player, who is leading the league this season in rebounds and dimes, posted a score of 21 points and eight assists in the matchup prior to sustaining the setback.

Jokic will have an MRI scan on Tuesday to evaluate the severity of the injury.

"Instantly, he realized there was a problem," stated Denver head coach David Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Anyone who is injured, that's difficult, most notably somebody as talented as he is. More information will come tomorrow."

"The team will adjust as a team. Of course, right now, I'm more concerned about him personally and the letdown of facing an event like that."
